Building Project

Dear Wawasee Community,

Best wishes to you as you celebrate the joy of this season.

On Tuesday, December 9, the Wawasee Community School Corporation Board of Trustees approved a project to construct a new Syracuse Elementary School; add instructional space to Milford School; renovate Wawasee High School art, music, band, media center, and technology areas; and enlarge Wawasee High School social studies rooms.  If bids come in low, high school parking and athletic field lighting will also be addressed.

We will begin the design process for these projects after the beginning of the year. Plans for the school and community use of the present Syracuse Elementary School will begin next year, too.

When payments begin on the new project, the Wawasee tax rate will drop!  We have larger debt payments ending that year. In addition, we have left financial room to meet our future technology and facility maintenance needs.

I know our employees haven’t had a pay raise in several years. It’s tempting to think of finding funds for employees from this or another facility project.  We can’t, though, mix money in different funds.  Money to pay employees comes from the state.  Buildings are funded locally.

I’ve included information from Tuesday’s hearing.  Please feel free to contact me if you have questions at 574-457-3188 (W), 574-457-6873 (C), or tedington@wawasee.k12.in.us.
