What is a referendum?
A referendum is a political question that has been referred to voters for a direct decision.
There will be one referendum question on the November 3rd ballot related to the Wawasee Community School Corporation.
What is the referendum question?
The "For the eight (8) calendar year's immediately following the holding of the referendum, shall Wawasee Community School Corporation impose a property tax rate that does not exceed twenty-eight and a half cents ($0.285) on each one hundred dollars ($100) of assessed valuation and that is in addition to all other property taxes imposed by the school corporation for the purpose of funding the expansion of safety and security measures, and the retention and expansion of school programming and instruction, including career-and-technical education and adult education?"
Why do we need a referendum?
Three key areas:
Funding formulas for public education have not kept up with the cost of inflation to educate students. The state requires schools to seek operating referendums to address this.
More students sign up for career training courses than available space. (38 students could not take the introduction to nursing course due to capacity issues.)
Safety: Safe Schools, Safe Kids, Safe Community.
